Earlier this week the world changed with the election of Senator Obama to be the next President of the United States. The people of Korea were quite mixed in terms of an Obama presidency with the younger Korean people gravitating towards the Senator for the same reasons that most young Americans do. However the older Korean people were not so happy due to Senator Obama’s stated intention to renegotiate the FTA between Korea and the USA. I was happy off course and spent the entire lunch break and then some extra time until Senator Obama achieved the required 270 electoral votes to clinch the presidency.

That entire day was a little extraordinary because I was watching the election with one liberal Canadian and one conservative from the state of Washington. I also work with another conservative from Arizona and both of my co-workers were not happy at all when Senator Obama won. I was simply over the moon and every time on that day, I thought about “President Obama” I couldn’t help but smile. At the same time I felt a little sad for some of my conservative co-workers who started to mutter statements like:

I am just so sad to see the United States of America become the United Socialist States of America.

I think that is a bit overstated, I don’t beleive the USA will ever become socialist regardless of the policies implemented by the Obama administration. I have argued on this blog that certain policies that lean towards socialism would not be so bad especially when it comes to healthcare. For example, I was quite astounded to pay $17 to visit a Doctor and purchase antibiotics here in Korea (My health insurance doesn’t start until December). Anyway this is not meant to be an argumentative post but merely a statement of hope that some conservatives/republicans will slowly stop feeling bitter with regards to the Obama presidency.

1. 왜 버락 오바마의 미국 대통령 당선은 대한민국의 국익에 반하는가?

대한민국의 국익을 현 정권이 규정할만한 다음 세 가지, 즉

1) 국내정치 : 대북 정치-경제우위, 미국의 군사력에 기반을 둔, 압도적, 주도적 통일.
2) 국제정치 : 미국을 업고 동북아 4강 구도에서 적극적인 역량 발휘
3) 국제경제 : 한국의 무역흑자를 가능케 할 대규모 대미 무역흑자
로 단순화 한다면, 버락 오바마의 당선은 국익에 명백히 반한다. 아마 2~3년 뒤엔, 한국에서 오바마 지지한다고 했다간 좋은 소리 못 듣고 다닐 가능성이 크다.

1) 국내정치 차원
(1) 오바마가 선거운동에서 밝힌 바, 미국은 북한 핵문제에서 외교에 큰 비중을 둘 것이며, 직접협상을 할 것이다. (반면 매케인은 대북 강경책을 시사했다.) 여기에는 대북 제재 해제는 물론, 대량의 식량-석유 지원이 수반될 수 있다. 남한의 현 반북보수정권은 예상되는 미국의 북한 지원(미국의 북한 퍼주기)에 소극적일 수 있다. 이렇게 되면 남한의 가치는 떨어진다. 남한의 가치는 ‘미국이 거쳐 가는 대북 창구'역할, 그리고 ‘대북 지원의 곳간'역할에 있었기 때문이다.
(2) 북한은 남한을 따돌리고, 미국과 직접 협상을 할 수 있으며(통미봉남), 이 와중에 북한은 예전에 중국과 소련 사이에서 그랬듯, 중국과 미국 사이에서 자기의 몸값을 높일 수 있다. 북한의 가치는 높아질 수 있다. 물론 북한이 핵협상에서 (한국과 일본을 따돌리고) 미국과 원만히 문제를 해결해 나간다는 전제가 충족될 때의 일이다. 더불어 김정일을 비롯한 북한의 핵심권력층에 큰 이상이 생기지 않는다는 전제도 만족해야 한다.
(3) 아프가니스탄과 이라크에서 전쟁을 치르며 많이 지친데다, 금융위기로 당분간 군대에 충분한 예산 배정을 하기 어려울 미국 정부는 해외 주둔지의 전비를 주둔지 국가에 많이 떠넘길 수 있다. 그렇지 않아도, 미국에서 헤어 나올 수 없는 세력이 집권한 한국은 향후 4년간, 주한미군 주둔비용, 혹은 주한미군 관련하여 ‘아주' ‘더' 많은 양보를 하게 될 것이고, 언론을 통해 이 소식을 접할 대다수 한국인들은 미국에 반감을 갖게 될 것이다. (매케인이 당선된다 하더라도, 그 요구 수준은 조금 낮아지거나, 다른 형태로 나타나게 될 것이다.)
(4) (1), (2), (3)을 종합할 때, 경제적 우위야 남한이 계속 유지하겠지만, 흡수통일에 버금갈만한 남한의 압도적, 주도적 통일은 불가능하게 될 것이다. 북-미 직접대화로 북한 문제에 대한 발언권이 크게 떨어질 것이다. 현 정부가 기치로 내걸은 ‘대미관계 회복'도 결국 한국의 대미감정 악화로 귀결될 가능성이 있다.

2) 국제정치 차원
(1) 1)의 경우에서 제시했듯, 북-미 관계는 개선될 가능성이 크다. 반면 한-미 관계는 대북 지원의 경우(우파의 반발)나, 주한미군 비용 관련(좌파의 반발)하여, 이래저래 악화될 가능성이 크다.
(2) 이 경우 한국은 주변 4대 강국에 어떻게 자신의 입지를 어필할 수 있을지를 근본적으로 다시 생각해 봐야하는 상황에 처하게 된다. 북한문제는 이미 북-미 대화로 자신의 손을 떠났고(이에 따라 한국의 가치는 급락하고), 경제문제는 금융위기로 섣불리 나서기도(해외투자), 많이 사주기도(소비시장) 어려운 상황에서, 어떻게 중국, 러시아, 일본, 그리고 미국에게 ‘아직 한국의 중요성이 떨어지지 않았음'을 설득시킬 수 있을 것인가? 하영선 서울대 외교학과 교수가 최근 조선일보 칼럼에서 ‘정신 바짝 차리고 어떻게 하면 새로 판을 짤 수 있을지 고민할 것'을 촉구하고 있음에 유의하자.

3) 국제경제 차원
(1) 오바마가 되든, 매케인이 되든, 서브프라임 모기지 사태로 말미암아, 미국 국민들의 구매력이 최악으로 떨어졌다. 따라서 미국인들의 소비 양상은 식품류 같은 가장 기초적인 분야의 비중이 커질 것이다. 반면, 한국이 미국에 수출하는 자동차, 휴대폰, 컴퓨터(반도체)등의 고부가가치, 고도기술집약 제품의 소비는 급감할 것이다. 그리고 이 위기를 극복하더라도, 미국인들은 2008년의 기억을 잊지 않고, ‘분수에 맞는 소비'로 돌아갈 것이라 보는데, 이렇게 되면 고가의 고부가가치 상품을 쉽게 구입하지도, 여러 차례 구입하지도 않을 것이다. 즉, 미국은 인구 및 소비 수준상 세계 최대 소비시장의 지위를 유지할지는 모르겠지만, 그 규모는 작아질 것이다. (중국은 소비수준이 아직 부족하고, 유럽은 분수에 맞는 소비를 하는 편이기 때문에 규모가 적정하다.) 즉, 예전만큼 미국시장에서 재미를 보긴 이제 틀렸다. 새로운 신흥시장을 시장을 찾아야 한다. …특히 오바마는 그의 발언으로 보아 우리가 그토록 팔고 싶어 하는 자동차의 수입을 어떻게든 막으려 들 것이며, 시간을 벌어 자국의 대항력을 키우고, 결국엔 한국에 한국 자동차보다 ‘훨씬 저렴하고, 훨씬 연비가 높으며, 훨씬 친환경적인 자동차'를 수출하려 들 것이다. (매케인은 ‘유정을 더 뚫어서 기름을 계속 쓰자'고 한 만큼 고연비 자동차에 대한 ‘개념'은 없다고 봤다.) …

2. ‘국익'에 반함에도 불구하고 왜 버락 오바마를 지지하는가?
1) 개인 차원
(1) 흑(父)과 백(母), 동양(인도네시아)과 서양(미국)과 아프리카(케냐)가 어우러져 생긴 ‘진정한 미국인', ‘미국의 진정한 이상의 결정체(Real American)'이기 때문이다. 신분에 차별이 없으며 만민이 자유로운 나라, 기회의 평등이 보장된 나라, 그렇기 때문에 압제와 가난에 신음하던 사람들이 밝은 내일을 찾아오는 나라. 피부색과 종교와 신념과 문화에 관계없이 공동의 목표를 위해 매진하는 나라. 이게 미국의 진정한 이상이라고 본다. (오바마가 항상 말하듯, 전 세계에서 이런 사람이 대통령이 될 수 있는 나라는 사실상 미국밖에 없다.)
(2) 학창시절에 인종정체성 문제로 방황하며 마약도 하는 등, 최악을 경험했다. 그러다가 대학교 들어와 정체성 문제를 극복하는 과정에서 ‘각성'했고, 최고가 됐다. 나는 이렇게 ‘밑바닥'을 경험한 사람을 신뢰하는 편이다. 그들은 ‘옛날'과 ‘초심'을 잃지 않는다. 자기가 왜 마음을 고쳐먹었는지, 자기가 추구한 이상이 무엇이었는지를 잊지 않는다….
(3) 오바마는 초심을 잊지 않았다. 하버드 법학대학원에서 흑인으로 법학 학술지 편집장을 지냈을 정도면, 월스트리트든 뉴욕이든 어디든, 어떤 회사에서든 수억원에 달하는 연봉을 받으며 편히 살 수 있었을 터다. 하지만 지역공동체 조직가로 일했던 시카고로 돌아왔고, 사회운동을 계속했다…

2) 나라(한국) 차원
(1) 한국 사회문화
-. 흑인이 미국 대통령으로 당선된다는 것은 실질적 인종차별주의 국가인 한국에서 ‘깜둥이'비하 시각이 사라질 계기가 된다. 차별정도가 가장 심했을 흑인의 위상이 급변하므로, 비(非)백인 외국인 일반에 대해 갖고 있던 다수 한국인들의 ‘저열한'인식도 상당수준 개선될 것으로 보인다….
(2) 한국 정치
…오바마의 당선은 ‘시대착오', ‘시대순응', ‘시대선도'의 감각을 한국 국민에게, 그리고 정계에 심어줄 것으로 본다. 그래서 오바마의 당선을 국내정치적 차원에서 바란다. 매케인이 당선된다면, 기존, 아니 옛날 인물-통칭 구악(舊惡)들이 미국 매파들과의 인맥을 과시하며 거들먹거리는 참상을 봐야할 것이다. 하지만 오바마가 당선되면, 합리적인 젊은 우파들이 전면에 나서서 미국과의 관계를 재정립 할 가능성이 있다. 미국일변도의 의존패턴을 어떻게 극복할지가 주목된다. 적어도 이들은 ‘소미국주의'를 내세우지는 않으리라 기대한다. 그래서 매케인이 아니라 오바마의 당선을 바라마지 않는다.
(3) 한국 경제
…반면 오바마는 자유무역을 부정하진 않아도, 모든 것을 시장 자율에 맡기지는 않을 것이다. 일자리를 만들려면 자국산업보호가 절실하기 때문이다…. 특히 고용 효과가 큰 자동차 산업을 비롯한 제조업을 보호하기 위해서 오바마는 한국과 일본에 상당한 압력을 가할 것이다. …이 와중에 한국에서 자동차를 비롯한 내구재 제조업에 집중되어있던 산업구조가 급속히 변할 것이다. 그렇지 않아도 소비가 줄은 마당에 수출이 안 된데다, 압력이 가해지면서 비용까지 오른다. 계속 생산하겠다면 미국에다 공장을 짓는 수밖에 없다. 오바마가 그렇게 비난하던 일자리송출(Job Shipping)이 한국에서 벌어지게 된다. 노동의 비율이 큰 산업들이 송출되거나 사라지는 만큼, 한국의 실업률은 많이 높아질 것이다… 그 와중에 신(新)산업구조가 형성될 것이다. 문화, 소프트웨어, 환경, 통신, 지식산업 쪽이 오랜 시간에 걸쳐 성장할 것이다. 특히 오바마가 무역장벽으로 내세울 ‘환경'쪽의 급격한 발전이 예상된다. 간단히 말해서, 그렇지 않아도 오래 못 갔을 한국의 20세기형 산업구조, 절박하고 고통스럽게 21세기형으로 몰아가 줄 것 같아서 오바마를 지지한다.

3) 한반도 - 동북아시아 차원
…민주당-오바마라는 호기를 절대 놓치려 들지 않을 북한은 북-미관계에서 ‘엄청난 선물공세'를 벌일 가능성이 있다. 부시 집권 8년 동안 잃어버렸던 것들을 찾으려 굉장히 적극적으로 나올 것이다. 그리고 지금 확실하게 관계를 다져놓게 되면 적어도 오바마의 임기, 혹은 연임이라도 하게 된다면 10년에 가까운 충분한 시간을 벌게 된다….

(3) 그리고 오바마의 당선으로 북미관계가 개선된다면 북한이 조금 잘 살게 될 텐데 이것은 전혀 한국에 위협이 못되며, 장기적으론 이득이 된다. 북한이 어느 정도 살아야 통일을 한다고 가정 시 충격이 적은 것은 누구나 다 안다.

4) 세계 차원
(1) 비운의 진짜 대통령, 앨 고어(Al Gore)의 진가가 오바마 행정부에서 발휘될 가능성이 높다. 급격한 환경 친화적 정책이 예상된다. 특히 미국은 자국의 경제적 문제해결의 수단으로도 상당히 강력한 환경상의 규제 압박을 가해올 것이다.
(2) 금융위기와 아프가니스탄-이라크 전쟁을 통해 국력이 ‘너덜너덜'해진 미국은 다른 나라와의 ‘제대로 된' 공조가 절실해졌다. 미국 최고주의를 고수하려는 매케인은 이것이 불가능하다. 그러나 ‘전 세계에 친척이 퍼져있고(아프리카(친가)-아시아(여동생)-미국(외가)-유럽(독일에서 유학한 이복누나 아우마)', 유년기를 ‘세계 최대의 이슬람 국가인' 인도네시아에서 보냈고, 미국사회에서 인종정체성으로 고민한 오바마는 ‘미국최고주의'를 지양할, 아니 표면적으로는 많이 숨길 가능성이 있다. ..

Before they went to bed, however, bloggers across Asia wrote about what they hoped and expected to find out when they wake up.

In Indonesia, Maman wrote that an “anxious feeling” was coming over her. And, despite the polls agreeing with her, she is preparing for a GOP win.

“I am really having a strange feeling about the US Election, it's a strange feeling I can't describe. The poll survey surely go to my favor, OBAMA will win, but I do believe that race will play in the final result. I try to scare myself with the reality IF GOP win this election, it will be a big POUNCH on only to my stomach, but to almost most of the average American.”

In South Korea, Expat Jane, writes that she’s also feeling “nerves and anxiety” but is excited to find out the results.

“I've been so very cool during most of this campaign. At least, when it comes to the discussion of Obama winning because I believe he will. By this time tomorrow, we'll know.”

In the Philippines, Martin Perez, makes one last plea and further addresses why Filipinos should support Obama.

“For a segment of the Philippine population, the possibilities are within their reach. They just don’t look towards government for this. Middle class Filipinos make do and succeed inspite of the failings of their government. That there are jobs waiting for us abroad is part of our modern paradigm. That we aspire for reliably wealth generating jobs such as medicine, law and accounting, is part of our national intuition. And that we need nothing from government because it takes from us more than we receive is by and large remains the cancer in our society that Dr. Jose Rizal died not having incised.

For the people who have chosen not to have a stake in government despite being able to do so, what they seek is not merely a government that works, but a government they can trust. They need a reason to believe that it can be a force for good. Their contributions — whether time, money, effort or even prayer — should address specific needs, real goals, and achieve tangible results. How we activate and inspire these people is an open question.

It is a question to which Barack Obama has responded excellently.”

Perez further addresses Obama’s campaign.

“Through his campaign, Barack has demonstrated an ability to build a coalition from the ground up. Through his multi-faceted, multi-tiered campaign, he has gotten many people involved and interested in politics, whether they be first-timers or like-the-first-timers. His organization provides a wonderful case study in how media (now with no line between traditional and new) can be effectively utilized to promote a political brand and message. Moreover, his fundraising and rallying capabalities are testaments to not just the efficiency of their campaign machine but to his character. Barack has a quality, an appeal that demands respect, if not that then at least our attention. Most importantly, the message he carries is one I have long wanted to articulate.

What I wish to take out of watching the US elections is a sense of the audacity of hope. Through my study and comparison of various systems, I realize that empowerment comes from that core belief we all share regardless of our status in life — that our hard work will pay off and that tomorrow will be a better day. In Barack I see someone who has been able to inject new energy into the system by reminding people of this fundamental hope. And thus for a Filipino observer such as I, there is simply too much to learn from Barack Obama.

I am under no delusion. Barack Obama is not running for the presidency of the Philippines. But chances are, that in not too many years from now, one of us who have lived through this election cycle will.”

Lastly, in China, Stan Abrams also writes that he is anticipating the results.

“Tomorrow morning at 8:00 I will be sitting in a room at the Renaissance hotel watching CNN, pouring cups of coffee down my throat and trying not to let my blood pressure get too high. (I refer to the AmCham election-watch event — see more info here.)

As I’ve mentioned a few times recently, I have spent a huge amount of time following the election this year. Needless to say, the suspense is killing me, and I really need this to be over so I can move on with my life.”

The expat in China goes on further to state he is “tired” of being embarrassed by the U.S. government.

“It should come as no surprise that I’m tired of explaining to people why Bush was elected/re-elected. I’m tired of having to agree with critics of the U.S. government, tired of being embarrassed by Bush’s latest blunder, tired of saying that this is all temporary (much more difficult after 2004). Bush, McCain and Palin bashing has been a great source of fun and entertainment over the years, of course, but yeah, I am ready for it to be over. Obama’s consistent talk about restoring the image of the U.S. in the world is probably the single most important issue for the average expat, and I dare say that he’s got the expat vote locked up solidly.”

The heated campaign trails have reached the Internet with global bloggers noting the comments.

A Bosnian-American Fedja describes the comments as disturbing and that McCain should have said something in defense of his rival.

The most disturbing part of the rally was when McCain asked the question: “Who is the real Barack Obama” and someone from the audience shouted “A terrorist!” We all know that the intellectual level of McCain supporters is that of a 5 year old with a slight mental retardation, but rather than stepping in and saying “That's out of line, sir…” McCain contorted his disfigured face into a smirk and carried on.

The blogger goes on to write about Palin’s rally and what October 6, 2008 will now be remembered as.

If you thought that this was the climax of this sad day for America, you were wrong. At another rally, being held at the same time, Sarah Palin was throwing the kitchen sink at Obama, trying to associate him with a man who was engaged in despicable acts when Obama was 8 years old and who served with Obama on two charity boards where many conservatives served. She said: “what are we going to do with him?” And someone from the audience shouted: “Kill him.”

This should be remembered as the day when McCain and Palin became just two sad, racist, xenophobic, idiotic criminals with nothing but hatred spewing out of their disfigured faces. I will be truly ashamed to be American if these two get to run our exhausted country.

An expat in South Korea Expat Jane agrees with the Bosnian-American blogger, stating that the Republican candidates shouldn’t have disregarded the comments.

If you continue to support a man that will stand and say nothing while his supporters say this then you're just as evil as he is. And I'm someone who in 2000 thought McCain wouldn't be so bad. Clearly, he's learned all the bad and dirty tricks that kept him from the nomination in 2000.

Letting people yell “kill him” is simply dangerous and unnecessary. I also have to say if you don't support him but you sit back and don't tell others about this video and what's in it, you're complicit too.

Can you imagine how much worse this makes the USA and its citizens look? Like Obama or not he's a husband and father of two young girls. I don't like McCain or Palin but I don't wish death on either one of them. This is an outrage!

Australian blogger of firedoglake, states that Palin and McCain are allowing “lies” to spread.

You can never accuse the McCain/Palin ticket of not playing to their base. The economy is tanking, despite McCain's impotent grab for the bailout laurels, and Obama is widening his lead in the polls, so the “brains” behind the ticket have resorted to what they do best: sliming the opposition. Churning out the bilious hate and the barely veiled bigotry, McCain and Palin started the new week on the campaign trail, leaving behind a wake of vitriol and lies.

Across the Atlantic in Portugal, João Lopes, points out that Palin left out poignant facts when speaking of Obama’s relationship with William Ayers.

A menos de um mês (4 de Novembro) da eleição do Presidente dos EUA, isto significa que os próximos tempos poderão não ser muito edificantes.

The news of the Republican campaign trails have further hit the Twittersphere, with Tweeps commenting on the “Kill him” remark in a forum.

African American Tweep, Zik, was one of the poignant Tweeps in the forum, stating his disapproval of the remark and that a vote for McCain/Palin resulted in a vote for racism.

Another African American, mmoney, stated that the obvious racisim could eventually lead to something more horrific.

Finally, McCain Supporter was also flabbergasted by the comment and stated an apology was necessary.

Japan’s Nikkei Index was down 4.12 percent while the Australian Securities Exchange fell 4.32 percent. The Hong Kong exchange dropped 1.4 percent.

he Korea Exchange in Seoul, South Korea, was down 0.72 percent, after being off more than three percent earlier. The American stock market was down almost 778 points at closing Monday — just under 7 percent.

부시 미국 대통령이 1박 2일 짧은 방문을 놓고 대한민국의 국민들의 환영과 반대시위를 보며 부시는 어떤 생각이 들었을까. 그를 따라온 미국 언론과 세계 여러 나라 기자들은 이런 현상을 지켜보며 자국에 어떤 뉴스 기사를 송고했을까. 서울 시청에 모여 미국 대통령의 방한을 적극적으로 환영 한다는 인파가 한 쪽에는 성조기를 다른 한 쪽에는 성경책을 들고 있는 모습과 청계광장에는 부시 방한을 반대하는 촛불집회가 경찰의 강력진압(수십명 부상, 100여명 연행)에 무너지는 모습에 이들은 어떤 반응을 보였을까. 궁금해진다. 다들 알다시피 부시는 자국 내 여론조사에서 역대 가장 인기 없는 대통령 중 한명이다. 그런 그가 우리나라에 와서 이렇게 뜨거운 지지를 받을 줄 미처 생각하지 못했을 것이다. 자국에서는 인기가 없지만 우리나라에서는 눈물 나게 환영을 해주니 고맙기까지 했을 것이다.부시 방문을 대대적으로 환영하기 위해 시청에 모인 인파들은 어느 나라 국민이며 청계광장에 모여 반대하는 국민은 또 어느 나라 국민인가. 같은 일에 이렇게 극과 극의 모습을 보인다는 것에 일단 놀라움을 감출 수 없다.일단 부시 대통령은 하루도 안 되는 정상회담 시간에 유리한 고지를 점령해서 좋겠다.[…] 쇠고기 문제는 이미 미국이 뜻을 이루었고 이제 아프가니스탄 파병과 방위비 분담금 문제만 임기 내 해결하면 이번 짧은 방문에 많은 국익을 선양하고 돌아가는 부시 모습을 자국에 보여줄 수 있을 것이다. 그저 부러울 뿐이다.부시 대통령은 앞으로 임기가 6개월 남았다. 그 뒤 어떤 정부가 들어설 지 지금으로서 아무도 모른다. 그가 주장하는 파병문제는 현 부시 정부에 선물이 될 공산이 크다. 또 방위비 분담 문제 역시 좋은 선물이 될 것이다. 이런 의도를 알고 한기총과 그밖에 단체는 시청에 모여 기도회를 열고 부시를 열렬하게 환영을 했을까. 정말 국익을 위해 그 자리를 만든 것일까. 스스로 그런 생각을 했다면 반성하길 바란다. 이번 시청 환영 행사는 결코 국익의 도움이 되지 않을뿐더러 세계 여러 나라에 웃음거리 밖에 되지 않았다. 정말 나라를 사랑하고 국익을 위한 다는 것이 무엇인지 생각을 하고 움직여도 움직이는 것이 순서였다는 사실이다. 무조건 친미를 해서 우리가 얻을 수 있는 것은 없다. 돌아오는 것은 굴욕적인 외교와 경제적 손실뿐이라는 사실을 어찌 모른단 말인가. 지금 나는 반미를 주장하고자 하는 것은 결코 아니다. 친미를 하더라도 상황 파악을 못하는 한기총의 시청집회를 두고 하는 말이다. 지금 국민 대다수는 이명박 대통령이 진정한 실용외교를 하길 바라고 있다.[…]

당신들의 천국은 미국이고 하나님은 부시인가?

미국소고기 수입으로 인한 한국내 반미감정 고조를 이유로 저는 부시가 안올 줄 알았습니다. 퇴임을 불과 5개월여 남은 대통령이 남의 나라 와서 뭐 딱히 할 일이 있어 보이지도 않는데다가 자칫 괜히 험한 꼴을 볼지도 모르는데 설마 오랴 했던거지요. 그러나, 그는 한번의 일정 연기후 아시아 순방의 첫번째 방문국으로 한국을 택했네요. 비록 1박 2일간의 짧은 방문이지만 그의 방문을 감격스러워 하는 모습은 너무나 쉽게 목격이 됩니다.

뭐 백년이 훨씬 넘은 한미관계나 그 떨칠 수 없는 관계의 긴밀함등은 새삼스럽게 논하기도 뭐합니다. 외교통상부 홈피에 나와있는 미국내 재외동포수만해도 200만명이 넘습니다. 어학연수등 목적으로 단기 체류하고 있는 한국인들의 숫자까지 고려하면 미국내 한인수는 그 규모를 헤아리기도 어렵습니다. 우리가 아주 잘아는 LA에 살고 있는 한인 수만 100만명이랍니다. 웬만한 광역시 수준이지요. 한집안에 가족 한두명 미국에 살고 있지않은 집이 없을 정도이니 한미관계의 밀접함이야 두말하면 잔소리입니다. 그런데, 그런데 말입니다. 밀접하고 친밀한 것도 좋지만 이젠 좀 성숙해야 되지 않겠습니까? ‘성숙한 동반자적 관계' 나랏님도 자주 말씀하시는 이런거 말입니다. 어차피 미국의 영향력아래 놓여있는 조국의 현실. 충분히 인정합니다. 그 근본이유가 무엇이었던 간에 625 전쟁이후 우리나라가 미국의 혜택으로 근대화의 기틀을 마련했던 것. 인정한다 이겁니다. / 그래도 이젠 세계 무대에서 경제 규모로 10위권에서 노는 나라가 되었으면 좀 할말은 하고 이젠 어깨도 좀 펴고, 좀 당당하게 관계를 유지할 수는 없냐 이겁니다. 노무현때는 그래도 좀 그런 모양새가 갖추어지나 했었습니다. 뭐 어차피 이라크 파병도 해줬고, FTA에도 합의했고 어찌보면 실질적 이득은 100% 못 취했을지 모르지만 그래도 꿀리고 무조건 미국이 하자는 대로 그렇게 끌려가지는 않았지 않냐 이겁니다.

그러나 어제 이땅에서 벌어진 일들은 제겐 참담함 그 자체였습니다. 한나라 대통령이 공개석상에서 우리나라의 모든 외교정책의 근본은 한미동맹이다라고 선언을 한 것부터 시작해서 대통령부터 어떻게 하면 부시를 기쁘게 해줄까 고심하고 애쓰는 모습은 대한민국 국적을 가졌다는 이유로 저의 마음에서 그나마 남아있던 국가적 자존감을 충분히 사라지게 했구요, 그 무더운 뙤약볕 아래에서도 서울시청앞 광장에 만여명이 넘게 모여 ‘웰컴 부시!'를 외치고 ‘성조기여 영원하라'를 부르며 벌인 「한미동맹강화를 위한 시국기도회」모습에서 좌절감을 느낍니다. 촛불들에게는 전경버스로 철통같이 봉쇄되었던 그 광장에서 말입니다. 순복음교회 조용기 목사는 “방송국과 인터넷과 신문을 점령하고 있는 원수 마귀를 우리의 기도를 통해서 쫓아내자”고 설교했구요, 한기총 회장인 엄신형 목사는 “대통령을 위해 기도한다. 혼란스러운 정국이 안정되고 촛불집회가 끝나기를 기도한다. 한국을 방문하는 부시대통령과 동맹국 미국이 함께 손잡고 번영하기를 기도한다” 고 했습니다. 과연 저들에게 하나님은 저 하늘에 계신 분인지 아니면 미국땅 워싱턴 ‘White House'에 계시는 분인지 헷갈립니다. 우리나라 기독교가 미국의 근본주의 신학을 근간으로 시작된 것이라던데 저들에게 있어 천국은 정말로 미쿡일지도 모른다는 생각이 듭니다.

부시의 방한은 그밖에도 꽤나 많은 이들을 흥분시킵니다. 조갑제는 우익환영집회에서 “촛불은 미국을 반대하는 죄를 저질렀으며 우리가 대한민국을 대표하며, 미친 개에겐 몽둥이가 약”이라고 외쳤고, 강남구청과 서초구청에서는 공무원들 수백명을 길가에 도열시켰다더군요. 태극기와 성조기를 두손에 들려서 말입니다. 저도 80년대 중딩시절 꽤나 많이 태극기 들고 동원되었었습니다.미쿡의 대통령 부시환영은 청계천에서 절정에 달합니다. 경찰은 부시 방한반대 집회가 열린지 30분만에 해산명령을 내리더니 색소와 최루액을 탄 물대포를 동원해 강제 해산에 들어갔으며 167명에 달하는 시민을 무차별적으로 연행했다고 합니다. 기자라고 신분을 밝혀도 “저것들은 기자도 아니야. 전부 연행해” 했다는데…섬뜩한 광기가 느껴집니다. 하루저녁에 160여명을 연행했다면….상부로부터의 해산지시가 얼마나 지엄했는지 상상이 갑니다. 저들에게 미쿡은 동맹국이 아닙니다. 미쿡은 형님나라, 아버지나라이고 그야말로 천국입니다. 정권 인수위원장이란 사람이 “미쿡에 가니까 오렌지하면 못알아 들어요. 아륀지 해야지” 라고 말했을때부터, 영어몰입교육을 하겠다고 했을 때부터 우리는 알아챘어야 했습니다. 이미 그들에게 미쿡은 신격화된 존재라는 것을…..[…]

I’m Korean. As Korean, I just want to say about the big problem in Korea about US beef.Why Koreans have to fight to their president?

April 18th, 2008, the president Lee Myung Bak of Korea and president Bush seemed to be so close. The problem is that they just seemed to be. Looking back, That was not good things at all. Because at the same time, the president of Korea agreed about importing US beef between Korea and US. Actually, at that time I thought that Koreans would must do some things that America is going to ask Korea and even if Koreans don’t want to do since Korea don’t’ have power.

That was true. After then, tens of thousands of Koreans are protesting US beef imports. All their desire is just that they don’t want to eat mad cow. In other words, they want government to renegotiate with America. That’s because America’s official announcement about their beef was not clear and Koreans could see the fact that we might have mad cow sometime through TV shows or online with plain some evidences. They are afraid of eating mad cow. Most of Koreans believe that US beef is not safe and will threaten their health.

However, in my opinion, the key is that Korea don’t have power. The president of Korea will also want to have safe beef and hope that Koreans will be happy as well. But this negotiation is not personal. It’s trade agreements between countries.Even if you were the president of Korea, the same situation would happen I guess. I would say that the issue is more political than economic.

A lot of Koreans are angry at the president and they think that the negotiation was unfair. That’s why they want renegotiation somehow. Koreans don’t believe government’s announcement of both America and Korea anymore, so they are protesting about the negotiation and president Lee Myung Bak by themselves on the street.

To be honest, I want them to stop doing it. Because I believe that the negotiation will fulfill the way America want to at the end. As a result, Koreans will seem to fight to each other in their own country. Their great protest might be ignored by America.

As Korean, I don’t want to say like this way though. However, in reality, I must admit the fact that America doesn’t care whether how many Koreans agree about this or not. Whether Koreans protest or not, America might think that it doesn’t matter at all.After all, Lee Myung Bak might rather get into trouble in Korea and out of Korea. How can we overcome this crisis? Any ideas?
