The current US leadership -- to the extent the term "leadership" applies anymore --- has overestimated the difficulty of finding a way to get along with Iran, taken actions that have been extremely counterproductive to building a relationship with Iran, and generally failed to seize the initiative with Iran when they had it. I suspect the difficulties the US is having with Iran today are not nearly as intractable as the US leaders have made them out to be. There are simply too many points where the interests of the US and Iran actually coincide.

North Korea is another matter altogether.

If there is a country the US leaders should be losing sleep over it is North Korea. Friday the commander of U.S. military forces stationed in South Korea spoke out about the dangers posed at this juncture; a time when the health of North Korea's leader is declining and the country faces a possible transition to military rule. It is something I alerted readers to a few weeks ago.

Hong Gwan-hui, a North Korea expert at the Seoul-based Security Strategy Institute, told UPI:

North Korea may stage a military provocation against the South if Seoul's conservative government does not comply with its demands.
Now is not the time to misread North Korea. The stakes and the risks are sufficiently high today that North Korea will need to be handled with extreme care in the coming months. For the sake of the South Koreans, Japanese, and also the North Korean people, let us hope competent people in Washington are paying close attention to the situation in the Korean Peninsula -- as the US goes through a transition of its own.

Obama will no doubt have an opportunity to appoint a few more judges with common sense to the court.

The ruling says the US Navy does not have to restrict its use of sonar off the coast of California, even though scientists point to evidence that sonar is killing whales and other marine life. BBC News notes that "The court did not deal with the merits of the claims put forward by the environmental groups." ABC News report on the navy's argument:

The Navy has conducted training exercises off the Southern California coast for more than 40 years. It argues that its current training exercises have taken on added significance since the United States has been engaged in ongoing hostilities.
Some little-known facts about hostilities in which the US is engaged: 1) various terrorist groups are known to operate inside deep sea nuclear submarines; 2) the US Navy has proved indispensable in fighting the war against the Taliban in land-locked Afghanistan; 3) the Iraq war has amounted to one long series of naval engagements.

Is all this news to you? It goes to show that the American right will use the pretext of "hostilities" to justify just about anything the president commands.

I blogged more about this sorry legal case here.

It is the wost of both worlds. The news magazine writes: "America is creating a barrier that is at once much too porous and rather too tight."

However, the wall is well on its way to becoming a reality:

By the end of this year the American government is supposed to have erected 670 miles of fencing along the 2,000-mile border with Mexico. Roughly half of the barrier is designed to stop everything bigger than a jackrabbit; the other half will let people through but stop vehicles. It is just part of a drive, stepped up in the past two years, to clamp down on illegal immigration and drug-smuggling. The Border Patrol is swelling from fewer than 6,000 officers in 1996 to more than 18,000 by next year. Unmanned watchtowers bristling with cameras and heat sensors are being developed. Finally, checks at proper border crossings are becoming more rigorous.
Continued here.

Voicing disagreement with the host's position against Mexican migrant workers in the US, Turner said:
How about from Canada? That's what worries me. Why don't we build a wall up there too?

I don't like walls. I remember we had a president who said,"tear down this wall." Now we are building a wall against Mexico. And the Israelis are building one against the Palestinians. And I've seen it too. And I don't like 'em. I think we need a world where people can go back and forth as they want to. . . .

Here's the interview on video -- the part where he talks about walls is in the last quarter of the video. In the earlier part Turner says he doesn't think the US government should bail out the idiots running the US automobile industry. They certainly are idiots -- for all the reasons Turner gives.

Updated

I have proof Fox News coverage of Obama's 2008 election victory was distorted and unbalanced. Compare what Fox News chose to show on election night, to Jotman's own eyewitness account.

The day after Obama's historic election victory, Fox News decided to do a story on "Communist symbolism" at the Obama victory rally outside the White House. Various right-wing video bloggers have run with the theme.

In this interesting live video-blog, (Fox? NBC?) television news viewers respond with dismay to a televised account of the Pennsylvania Avenue celebration filmed from inside the White House compound (Interesting perspective the network news cameraman chose). Fox and perhaps some other television news coverage of the event had given viewers the impression that something quite ominous might be happening on Pennsylvania Avenue.

Now check out this Jotman video. It's one of several videos I made depicting the spontaneous celebrations in the nation's capital. The video scenes I show were taken from outside the gates. What a contrast to the FoxNews perspective!

On Tuesday, the people of the United States served George W. Bush and his supporters their eviction notice. Late that night, the people of America's capital -- by the thousands -- walked up Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House. They wanted to make sure that the Bush got word of the country's decision. Their message for Bush? Start packing.

Afraid the People might try to hasten Bush's departure, I was told that Bush and his family had been relocated to building across the street for the evening. Of course, they had nothing to worry about.

If one issue distinguishes the celebrants from Bush, it is the desire of the former to restore the Constitution and uphold international law.

It is no small irony that on account of the document which Bush has so tarnished, the president enjoys a legal protection not offered millions of Americans now faced with mortgage foreclosures: at least two months' notice prior to eviction.

Watch the video.

The definitive video series depicting events in the United States capital on one of the most historic nights in the country's history. I'm talking about the spontaneous celebrations that broke out in DC in the wake of the declaration that Barack Obama had won the presidency on Tuesday Nov. 4, 2008.

The enthusiasm of the people in each of the seven videos is infectious. Viewers report that one of the tunes in video #3 (Goodbye Bush) is contagious.

I shot a lot of video that night. Looking over my video clips the next day -- people cheering, dancing, telling jokes and shouting out their feelings -- a pattern emerged.

Before I get into that, though, take a look at the seventh -- and final -- of my videos about the spontaneous Obama victory celebrations outside the White House. It serves as a rousing introduction to the night:

The video above coveys to you the tremendous positive energy shared by nearly everyone present.

Each of the six other videos conveys a theme that that can be seen to have characterized the public's reaction to the Obama victory. The public reactions are listed below, with links to the respective videos.

1. The Greatest Day.I watched an Englishman get interviewed on telivision outside the White House. The man said:

"It was the greatest day."
And it was. It was the day that saw the election of the first African American president; the demise of the worst US Administration in memory; a chance for Americans to begin to reclaim their country's reputation among the nations; for everyone else on the planet, it was as if dark storm clouds had been blown away. It seemed as if the US might beome a necessary beacon of social stability, good government, human rights and leadership on the environment.

The greatest day was truly the happiest of days. The first video captures some of that joy.

2. Yes we did. I came to understand the secret of Obama's success more fully that night -- as "Yes we can" became "Yes we did." Obama had made an entire generation, whole new segments of American society connect with the political system.

The celebrants had not come to worship a hero, but to celebrate what they and their country had done, and the new future they might realize. Obama's achievement is not so much in having created a following of believers, but in having taught people the power of collective action.

To say that's it too soon for his supporters to say, "Yes we did," would be to miss this vital point. I think this video conveys what I am talking about.

3. Goodbye Bush. Tuesday night the people on the street said goodbye to Bush, and good riddance.

I heard someone say, "If we impeach Bush now, we can have first woman president (Pelosi) before the first black president."

Her words capture was on everyone's mind. Bush cannot leave soon enough. (I was informed that President Bush and his family had actually been moved out of the White House as the crowd gathered outside the White House.) The "goodbye Bush" cheers were some of the most fun to watch. Look for them on this video.

4. This country is ours. With the victory of Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential elections, Americans have every reason to be proud. I watched Americans point at the White House and cry out, "That house is ours!"

There was the sense that Americans were taking back their country from the war-makers and the big corporations. Americans chanted and sang. People had stood up for the possibility that patriotism might might once again align itself with the Enlightenment spirit of the country's founders: America as beacon for human rights and democracy. Although the media seems reluctant to depict this trend, Obama's supporters have shown that the US flag and other symbols patriotism are not the property of the those on the right. See this post and my accompanying video.

5. The dream is real. November 4, 2008 will go down as one of the greatest and happiest days in American history. For African Americans, the event was the fulfillment of a dream. I listened to a some women sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing" at the front gates of the White House. Witnessing this scene was one of one of the real highlights of the extraordinary night. And I captured the whole thing on video. If you only watch one of these videos, make it this one.

6. The people take back the capital. I witnessed a "three mile dance" through the streets of capital. It began outside the White House and finished up at the foot of Capitol Hill. The event was the culmination of an incredible evening of festivities. Five hundred people embarked on this journey. Although spontaneous, the dance seemed deeply symbolic. It was an enactment of the people taking back their capital, and by extension the country. The march is captured in this video:

Southeast Asian bloggers are celebrating the victory of President-elect Barack Obama. In fact, Obama's election success has led many bloggers in the region to reflect about the need for change in their local politics.

Congratulations to President-elect Barack Obama! Southeast Asian bloggers are celebrating his victory. In fact, his election success has led many bloggers to reflect about the need for change in their local politics. A sample of viewpoints in the region:

Rogue Economist hopes there will be “changes” as well in Brunei:

“It's official. The most powerful man on earth is now Barack Obama. This proves that nothing is impossible in this world, as long as you work (hard) for it. (Oh please God, Brunei needs someone like this to make changes!)”

Cambodia Calling reminds Obama about the challenges he will face:

“Why am I interested? Because it is everyone's business who becomes the leader of the most powerful nation in the world. The pressure on Obama will be immense. If Obama fails to deliver, it'll be a long time coming for another black president in the US.”

Return to Rai Ketak compares Obama’s victory to East Timor’s independence celebration:

“Today, phone calls and emails, online chats…All with one profoundly positive message. History does not make us. We make history. I have not felt like this since May 20, 2002. And one Timorese friend made the comparison over email as well:

“After Timorese independence, the election of Barack Obama is one of the great events of the 21st century. It does not matter what may come to pass afterwards. The great step has already been taken.”

Indonesia Anonymus wonders whether Indonesians will vote an Obama-like candidate:

“Indonesians, of course, just like many people in any other countries, are mostly for Obama. So we love Obama, no doubt about it. Now the question is: if there is an ‘obama' in our country, will we be able to spot him? Or better yet, will we vote for him?

“In Indonesia, that would make our ‘obama' half native Indonesian and half Chinese. Let's just say, our ‘obama' has a javanese mother from Solo, central Java, and an Indonesian-Chinese father with ancestors from Fujian province, China.”

GJ Jakarta notes that the world has high expectations for Obama:

“This is a huge amount of pressure for this guy, he has not only the weight of Americans’ expectations, but that of the entire world.

“The reality is there will still be a financial crisis, the USA will be in recession, there will still be soldiers dying in Iraq and Afghanistan, thousands of people will be out of work, many more will lose their homes. I know this guy didn't do that, he's not responsible, and people are just looking for a happy story, something for the future, some shining light from the dark tunnel.”

Mahaguru58 from Malaysia believes America has redeemed itself by electing Obama:

“America has redeemed itself today by electing a man whom we can all respect and honor. Just listening to him speak, gives us a sense of hope. Each word that he utters, each sentence that he proclaims, returns a sense of goodwill to America. Today, the whole world celebrates the coming of a new era.”

Obnoxious 5xmom advises Malaysian bloggers who are overjoyed by Obama’s victory to do something about Malaysia’s local problems:

“It doesn’t make sense. So many Malaysian bloggers are ooooing and ahhhaing over how Obama has won the USA election. They write so passionately about him and how he is going to bring changes to the United States and the world.

“Yet, in our very own backyard, here in beautiful Malaysia, they never even bother to do something about it. Why so over the moon with what is happening in the USA when we cannot even try to make the changes over here in our country?

“Why I don’t see them ever question our own country’s policies? Why I don’t see them ever get agitated with the things that happen over here that affects us? Why gushing over something over at the USA when we cannot even lift a finger to do something here?”

Noting that America has achieved a breakthrough after electing Obama, Lim Kit Siang bemoans the quality of race relations and nation-building in Malaysia:

“Obama’s historic breakthrough make many Malaysians ask whether it is possible for a Chinese, Indian, Kadazan to become the Prime Minister of Malaysia although the Constitution is very clear that any Malaysian citizen, regardless of race or religion can become Prime Minister.

“If such a question is asked 50 years ago, the nation’s founders would unhesitatingly answered in the positive as there is no constitutional bar - separate from the question of whether it was likely to happen.

“But if the same question is asked now, there will be strong voices (as heard in Parliament today when this question was posed) who would rise up to say no.

“Why is Malaysian race relations and nation-building going backwards in the past 50 years as compared to the historic breakthrough in race relations in the United States with Obama’s historic victory in the US presidential elections?”

Rocky's bru from Malaysia has some questions for Obama:

“Will he be able to turn around the US economy? Will he close down Guantanamo Bay? Will he stop America's holy War against Terror? I have my doubts. But who cares, uh? They say anyone after Bush would/should make a better US President, at least to the rest of the miserable world.”

The US embassy in Thailand held a mock elections in Bangkok. Guess who won in the ballots? HaPPi like a HiPPo describes the mood in Bangkok:

“In the past few days, Thai television and radio channels in Bangkok have been talking a lot about Obama and seem to have forgotten about PAD protesters. Every Thai person I know supports Obama and even the radio jockeys and news presenters love him. Soon we can expect Obama dolls and other goodies being sold on the Thai streets.”

DK from Singapore was first worried over the selection of Obama as the Democrat’s candidate:

“I must admit that I was kinda worried when I learned that Obama is the Democrat candidate instead of Hillary. My main concern was that he is a black and America might not be really for a black president yet. I’m glad I was wrong. I’m glad Obama is elected as the President of United States. And although we don’t know if he is the right person to bring USA and the world out of recession, we know that we have better chance with him in the White House.”

Stars in the making from Singapore is a supporter of McCain:

“Tears came to my eyes when I watched John McCain give his final speech of this election campaign. In my mind, John McCain should be the next President of the USA. His experience in foreign affairs & war will stand America in good stead, and to me, he is the stability that America & the world needs during these turbulent times.

“But America voted for “Change”. Obama is a good man, and will lead the country with integrity. He is a symbol of the American Dream, but how long will this dream last? Will reality bite when Obama steps into his first year in office? Will expectations be too much for him to meet?”

Obama has chosen a Filipino as his consultant on Asia Pacific issues. At midfield reacts:

“For Filipinos, we will now to see whether having a Filipina as his main consultant of Asia Pacific issues will benefit us and lead to Obama revisiting his position against the Filipino USAFFE veterans equity bill and other issues, not least of them how the war on terror is being carried out here.”

A Filipina Mom Blogger is curious about Obama’s foreign policy:

“As a Filipino, I am interested in Senator Barrack Obama’s foreign policy. In Obama, I see a president willing to reach out to world leaders, whether friend and enemy, to open dialogue and resolve differences through diplomacy rather than military engagement. After all, when did it hurt to sit down and talk to our enemies?

“An Obama election will send a signal to minorities across America and to countries around the world that the US is breaking through the racial divide, opening their hearts to people of all colors and religion.”

Tonyo Cruz asks Filipino activists to emulate Obama’s campaign strategies:

“For Filipinos, let us draw inspiration from Obama’s victory. Let us raise the call for change this early (Obama started his campaign two years ago; the next elections here will be in less than two years!), challenge the political parties, and make our issues the central issues in the presidential campaign. Of course, the Philippine political system is a totally different animal compared to the US system. But that should not be an excuse to throw out the whole Obama experience. There are plenty of lessons to learn and perhaps to also apply in our own situations.”

Let me say first off that I think George Bush was a horrible president, far worst than Thaksin on every level. Comparatively, Thaksin was small potatoes compared to the harm that George Bush caused to the US and many parts of the world. I don't know if people will agree with that, but that is my opinion.

So, what does that have to with anything?

Well, my point is that even with George Bush causing destruction to the US, there was no coup or military takeover, there was no kangaroo court to get him out of office, there was no attempt by the media to smear him with unsubstantiated lies and innuendo(like every supporter of his was bought with $10 bills), and you didn't have fascist thugs occupying the White House lawn trying to get him to resign and bring the government to its knees. There was no attempt by the opposition party to legally silence him with attacks against his patriotism(the equivalent of lese majeste) and get him thrown off the evening news for talking to his supporters. There was no attempt by agitators to take over the capitol and shut down Congress in order to get the police to shoot them and cause a major riot in the streets. There was no attempt to disenfranchise 3/4 of the electorate in order to get the governing party ousted in the name of “hope” and “change.”

Nope, even though 80% of the country detested Bush and thought the country was going down the wrong track, the American people put their faith in their constitution, the rule of law, and democratic politics. And they don't have a parliamentary system. They have to wait 4 years. In Bush's case, wait 8 long bloody years.

So what can Thailand learn from this?

Patience, for one.

Good sportsmanship, for two.
