Iran: US Elections from an Iranian Perspective

Iranian bloggers have launched a far-ranging debate about the elections in the United States at the time when such discussions are not seen in mainstream media.

Ahmad Talebi is one of Iranian bloggers who compares elections in Iran with the United States.

He notes:

“Perhaps we can suppose elections in our country as the opposite point of elections in America. Until some day before the election, most of the groups don’t know at all whether they are permitted to participate in the elections or not. Time for publicity is limited and it lasts only a few days.”

He adds:

“The opportunity to select is taken away in our election system, even if there is no unfairness and injustice. Consequently, people don’t know the president whom was voted in by themselves. The president may take some decisions which aren’t predictable. The president may embark on policies which aren’t permitted by the people.”

Hamid Reza Zandi begins his post asking this question:

“Is the election of a Democrat dangerous for Iran?”

He himself predicts that it will be very dangerous. He argues:

“Let's suppose that one of the Democratic Party’s candidates will be elected. Leaving the White House won’t make the Republicans happy at all, so they will try to find a way to redress this to some extent. The Republicans prefer to leave the White House so that they let the given conditions go to ruins. Then the next president can not control the given conditions.”

Hamid Reza adds:

“Bush, who is spending the last days, initiates a new war.”

Armin Sanaaei believes that the presidential elections in the United States are absolutely unfair.

He argues:

“In this election, because of the status and the power of America, someone who wins it can have a positive or negative effect on the life of every person all over the world, so in fact the people, who elect the president, decide instead of all mankind and I think that decision-making of the minority instead of majority can’t be fair.”

Armin continues:

“Whenever the Democratic Party assumes power, Iranian reformists can gain more power and they can move more. Political freedom has been increased and despotism has been weakened. But whenever the Republican Party assumes power, political freedom in Iran has been decreased and despotism could put pressure on its opponents.”

Armin ends his post wishing that Americans elect Barack Obama and Iranians elect Khatami in the next presidential election in Iran. He writes:

“I myself hope that Americans elect Barack Obama as the president of America and next year Iranians elect Khatami, and then we can wait for good days.”

Meanwhile, An anonymous Iranian blogger thinks that Obama can’t change government policy short-term.

He/She writes:

“America, whether good or bad, is a very big and a very well-ordered system which because of its efficiency – of course not for being moral – it has been the biggest power in the human history. It is impossible to change a well-ordered system in one night.”

Then he/she asks:

“What kind of voice is he due to give the Iraqi people who are fighting together in Iraq to end the conflict and all of them begin to tango instead of firing into each other?”

Abdollatif Ebadi tries to introduce Iranian people to the United States.

He writes in his blog about the United States and different aspects of life in that country. In a post entitled Acquaintance with Senator John McCain, he writes:

“Public opinion takes note of American Democrats and they turn a blind eye to Republican candidates for the presidential election to some extent.”

He then briefs his readers about McCain and adds:

“If McCain wins the elections in America, it is foreseen that the relations between the United States, its European allies and the Security Council – as representative of the world – with the Iran government will hit rock bottom and the economical and political friction against Iran will progress until punitive sanctions are introduced.”

If all the leaders of the different Countries would put there egos aside. I think most everyone could get along quite well. If we would stop judging each and work together this would be a much better world. There are individuals in every country that teach to hate and distrust others. Its time that the common man takes back the world and find ways to accept each others differences and let the governments of each country decide there own form of government even if it differs from our own.
