Rather than wax ecstatic on Obama's victory, the collective blog 20mai.net [fr] from Cameroon has chosen to go out in the streets and tape short interviews of young Cameroonians on yesterday's victory. In this video [fr], we learn that Obama is a bantoo name and that Cameroon knows how to keep its African pride and hopes in check, publicly.

The video has generated many comments. When the camera is not rolling, emotions take over, in this patchwork of readers' opinions :

jts comments :

I've noticed that global media did not waste time to record how Africans viewed [this election] and that the main stream media most followed by Africans did not bother to send a black tv anchor to cover the American vote.

austine mckyielle :

Martin Luther (King) can now smile serenely in heaven, long live America, God bless America

cent76 :

yes we can
Meme au cameroun ca peut bouger!

Yes we can, even in Cameroon, things can change !

jean luc :

My poor friends, if you believe that Obama will care about Africa, you are joking. He represents the brilliant capitalist, anti-communist, and racist. African friends, look after yourself, shoe away your old demons, your corrupted presidents…If a revolution is to come, you will have to act yourself, not a foreign guy, even if he is black. Obama cares about himself…I have a dream, but it is not Obama.

Samantha :

As a Cameroonian living in the USA, after Europe, I can assure you that Obama is first and foremost an American. An Afro-American will NEVER compare himself to an African, he is first an American, he thinks and acts like an American.[…] And, my African brothers, if Afro-Americans stand where they are today, it's because THEY FOUGHT for it. They did not let themselves be trampled with, like many of my African brothers in Europe.

<ahref="http://www.africanworker.fr.gd/">PEP JEAN :

At long last, a black man rules over the world. Such a shame for our old and rusty African presidents. They always workshipped the white man like a god. Obama proves them wrong.

Shalimar 444 :

BARACK OBAMA a gagné d abord parce qu’il n’avait aucun gene camerounais! the corruption’s DNA.

BARACK OBAMA won because he had no Cameroonian gene (the corruption DNA)

Ludovic :

Four years ago, Obama was totaly unknown in the world, he had to spell his name for journalists. Today, he is elected president of the first world power. This election, this meteoric rise inspires us, sons of Africa, beyond our suffering, the lack of work, we must keep the “courage to hope”, like Barack.

In the French-speaking blogosphere, a fiery debate has broken out whether people are supporting Obama's candidacy simply as a reflex or are they really judging him by his policies.

The French satyrical weekly “Le Canard Enchaîné“, a respected monument of journalistic independence in France, has taken the plunge : since it is printed on tuesday morning, editors chose to act as if Obama was elected President with a bold title: “America is not afraid of black anymore !”. And nor is France, they write, according to a recent poll that show 80 per cent of French voters as “ready to vote for a black president,” a few short years after flirting seriously with the extreme right.

This unexpected epiphany is not what is discussed on blogs by minorities in France. The heat is on the extraordinary hopes Obama is raising among the black and North African communities in France, and the question is: Is the color of skin blinding Obama's French “brothers” and “sisters”? On Safir News, a progressive muslim site, Zorah Bitan, elected city counsellor in a “tough” suburb of Paris, and herself of North African descent, writes [fr] :

In the suburbs, among the young generation, but not only, the support (for Obama) springs first from ressemblance. Obama is black, and that is enough. Zero defect. No thoughts, no sorting out, no examination, no details. It is as if those who complain all the time about being discriminated are unable to look beyond to appreciate what the person is, what she stands for, her accomplishments, and last, where she comes from. As the daughter of Algerian migrants, I don't feel a particular kinship with another daughter of migrants, just because we share a common history.[… ] Obama is black, so what? If he had been a white democrat, from a WASP family, I would have rooted for him. In France, let's not fabricate a symbol. Let a citizen emerge by talent, convictions, intelligence, dedication to the country, and we will be, I hope, 82 per cent to support him or her.

In the French Antilles, on the other side of the Atlantic, writer Raphaël Constant has sparked a fiery debate on Carib Creole [ fr] with his no less fiery opinion piece: ”Obamania, the childhood illness of blackness”.

The Obamania that seized the so called black world is totally and uterly infantile. Puerile, as nothing else is. The saddest thing is not that the Ti sonson, Milo or Freddo of the world believe that a Yankee president will change something in their life juste because he is black. No, the saddest thing is that opportunistic intellectuals in the French Antilles, in France, in Africa have been busy during those past month making us believe what they know is nonsense! Who can believe for one moment that Obama will transform the Empire in a friendly brother to other nations ? Who can believe that he will be able to dominate the Pentagon, the US army, the CIA, Wall Street, etc. All the state institutions that allow this country to dominate others ? Let's be serious. Obama is a Yankee, Afro-Saxon, the difference between him and an Anglo-Saxon is next to null. If he impresses us so much, it's because he is handsome and intelligent, sure, and also because his opponent is a stubborn elderly man, not at all sexy. If he'd been up against a beautiful and intelligent white man, the outcome would have been completely different.

The numerous reactions from Antilles readers are just as fiery. makendja erupts [ fr]:

Point barre.

I am black and, no, I don't support any black man just because he is black. I support Obama because as president of the U.S.A, first world power, he will confirm that we blacks are not the animals that they made us to be. And I will be happy to say to the arab, to the white man, to the chinese who spite me that, one day, I will be above them in my country, like Obama. Period.

Abelio retaliates [fr] :

Let's meet in six months or one year. We'll see what Obama will have brought to the “blacks” of the world. Abdoulaye Wade, president of Senegal, has already answered: “Nothing”.

In Guadeloupe, fwiyapin [fr] wants Obama to win. Period.

Obama is certainly not a savior. He is not going to change the world - nobody can, in fact. There will certainly be disillusions and misunderstandings when he will be elected, no doubt. But we can say that he will be a much better president that the former one. He will not change the life of nègres (nigers) in the world. But let's not hide our head in the sand by saying that this election is interesting and important only for Americans.

If France could vote in the U.S. election, 76 per cent would elect Obama reveals a poll published by sunday paper Le Journal du Dimanche [fr] . At 3pm local time on this crucial Tuesday, for lack of hard news on the outcome of the election, the French blogosphere and Twitter is abuzz with another vital matter: where to spend election night? Where are the best parties in Paris?

Pierrick Leurent [fr] has listed on his blog the official venues, along with En3mots : The “official” election party will be held at the Cine Aqua on the Trocadero (Paris equivalent to the “Sea World” theme park). This specific party, where the French media brass and the American officials in Paris will wine and dine, launched a tiny storm in a Champagne glass on Twitter. At €120 (140$) per guest, it is a very un-democratic party. @Myriam and many other scorn :

120€ to remain among your own kind of people, this is the ultimate security check, dear…

@ Heuristocrat, an American in Paris, thinks nevertheless it will be worth it [en] :

“Yeah but the food and drinks will be great and the crowd is a who's who”.

There will be parties for every budget, starting at 5€ with the “Young Democrats abroad” party near the Arc de Triomphe (Barrack Obagels will be served at 3am). The townhall of the 3rd arrondissement (district) in Paris will be open all night and crowded since everything will be Obama and free: art exhibitions, debates, two feature films (Little Miss Sunshine” and “Collision”), wifi, and lots of complementary wine. The staunchest supporters, who organized Obama support in France will be found at the ”Nuit Obama” (Obama night), hosted in a tennis club, in a suburb close to Paris.

Hotels and restaurants have jumped on the occasion to launch theme parties and menus: the culinary blog A Table reports that the Concorde Lafayette Hotel will serve ”Presidential Burgers” tonight, with two choices: The O Burger (fresh tomatoes, grilled gambas, curry and pineapple) versus the… “Elephant Burger” (roasted lamb and guacamole). It will be 3AM in Paris when the first results will be announced, so Breakfast-in-America will be cooking pancakes all night in the Latin Quarter to sustain the anxious crowd. In the mean time, nightclubbers are welcome at La Régence club where DJ Vynilove will groove the Paris wants Obama party (hot dogs galore).

Even the tiniest towns in rural France are in Obama mode today, down to Pfaffenhoffen (pop. 2,468), next to the German border, where the community cultural center will stay open all night, with giant television screens to follow the results.

But, what if….barakmaniaque [fr ] .. to conjure the worst, has left this pledge in a blog comment:

If McCain wins, I will bike naked from Montparnasse to Place de l'étoile

Nobody wants to face that.

Morocco may be in the grip of general Obamania, but a few voices here and there still stubbornly resist the flow. Not that the reluctant Moroccans would give their ballot to John McCain if they had the chance, but they are wary of the American model of democracy, of America, and more than a little sick of an election that hides its flaws under a Hollywood-inspired cast and plot.

In a severe post entitled “A good show does not equal democracy” [fr], blogger baraka from Tangiers doesn't mince words: “In the United States, democracy is a pure fiction”.

The media in countries that are part of NATO offer a wide coverage to the US presidential election, and convey a double message: the future of the allied countries lies in Washington, the United States is the model of democracy. But it is well known that the US Presidential election is tainted by money. This election is already costing over 1,5 billion USD. Below this superficial critique, lies another hidden reality: money makes the winner, but maybe it's the other way round, money goes to the candidate who was designated all along [..]

Baraka republishes a long article by Thierry Meyssan [fr], a controversial French writer who still maintains that no plane crashed into the Pentagon on 9/11, that it was all a plot, but has nevertheless a large number of followers, united by a solid mistrust, if not more, of America.

This show rejuvenates [American] society every four years, and helps clean up the United States reputation in the world. The global public opinion is invited to a show, crafted to make them forget previous crimes and restore hope. This year, the cast is particularly good: a dashing young black man, assisted by an old political fox, against a veteran flanked by a shameless woman. The global media have already written their headlines on post Bush America, as if wars in Afghanistan and Iraq were forgettable errors of the sole Bush administration.

Amazing flow [fr] chose to zoom in on a side of Obama that has gotten very little coverage in Moroccan or French media: his support of the death penalty. In a video montage, he matches footages of public statements on this issue by Obama and Jean-Marie Le Pen, the champion of the French extreme-right, and find them perfectly in tune. Too banal comments gloomily under the video:

Obama or not Obama, nothing will really change in the foreign policy of the United States.

Blogger chergaoui [fr] has no time for gloominess: he is on a rush quest for online election creativity, which obviously is on Obama's side. After Pumpkins for Obama and Design for Obama, he recommends warmly his latest finding: “Not another C student“, t-shirts adorned by the best Bush's gaffes of the decade, and Republican blunders of the year.

Their objective is to communicate that it is time to put a stop to the ignorance and incompetence that ruled the White House for eight years. They denounce mediocrity, and in a pretty way: stickers, posters, t-shirts, with excerpts of speeches and interviews, downloadable for free.
