A blogger’s post Why am I supporting Obama even though it might be against national interests has been popular in portal sites. I introduce why he is supporting Obama and why he thinks that his victory will be against national interests in Korea, but why he observes optimistically.

1. Why will the winning of Obama be against our national benefits?
There are three categories that the current government pursues for national interests.
1) Domestic Politics: Based on economic superiority and the US military power, South Korea will lead reunification
2) International Politics: With the support of the US, South Korea will display active capability to 4 powerful countries in Northeast Asia
3) International Economy: South Korea will look for trade surplus toward the US on a large scale of trade
In a simple way, Obama's victory will be against national benefits. 2-3 years later, it is possible that people are not happy about Obama supporters.

(1) As Obama mentioned during his campaign, America will place a great deal of weight on diplomatic relations about nuclear with North Korea and will try to have the direct negotiation (whereas John McCaine implied the hard-line policy toward North Korea). Obama's strategy means that he will dispel the restraint against North Korea and might follow food and oil support in a large scale. On the other hand, the currently conservative Korean government will be negative to the US support to North Korea. Then, it means that the value of South Korea will go down. The value of South Korea has been the role of ‘the hatch that America should pass by in order to contact North Korea' and ‘the repository for North Korea.'
(2) North Korea can leave South Korea out in the cold and can have direct negotiation with the US (‘with the US and without South Korea’). As North Korea had done between China and the Soviet Union before, they can make themselves worth more between China and the US. The value of North Korea can go up. This is possible under the condition that North Korea smoothly solves the nuclear issues with the US (cutting South Korea and Japan out) and that the core power including Kim Jong Il is not unstable.
(3) The US has been tired of having many wars against Afghanistan and Iraq, and is going through financial crisis. Therefore, there is the possibility that US army based countries by themselves have to take care of the expenses for those soldiers. Now, Korea is governed by people who can do whatever America wants. Therefore, for 4 years from now on, Korea might have to concede more than we do now regarding expenses for American stationary troops. If Korea reads news regarding these issues, the anti-American sentiments will be stronger (Even though McCaine will be selected, the situations are not going to be so much different).
(4) When we look at (1), (2), and (3), even though South Korea is economically richer than North Korea, it will be impossible to have reunification that South Korea leads. Due to the direct dialogue between North Korea and the US, South Korea's voice will be dramatically weaker. Even though the current government is emphasizing ‘better relations between the US and South Korea,' it might end up with the worse relations between them.

(1) Relations between North Korea and the US might improve. On the contrary, relations between South Korea and the US might be worse due to support for North Korea (conservative Koreans will not be happy about this) and expenses for American US soldiers in South Korea (progressive Koreans will not be happy about this).
(2) Then we have to think how we will be positioned among four powers. North Korean issues can be dealt with North Korea and the US (without South Korea). Therefore, the value of South Korea will go down. Due to economic crisis all over the world, trade with other countries might not work as good as we expect. Then how can we persuade China, Russia, Japan, and the US the importance of South Korea? Like a professor at SNU said in a column at Chosun Newspaper, ‘we should collect our minds and think about how we will design ourselves.â€

(1) Whoever will be the US president, Americans can’t avoid financial crisis and their consumer power will be the worst. Therefore, products that Korea sells to the US—high value-added products such as cars, cell phones, computer (IT)—will be out of popularity. Even though they will overcome the financial crisis, Americans will remember 2008 and won’t spend as much as they do. They those high value-added products are not going to be sold so much. Even though America will keep the title, the world biggest consumption market, the scale will be smaller (level of consumption of China is still low and Europeans spend economically). Therefore, we are not going to have so much fun in the American market and should find a new market…. Especially, as Obama said before, he will try to block the automobile market that we would like to target. He will help the domestic market to be stronger and in Korea the US will try to sell more economic, better fuel efficient, and more eco-friendly cars. (In McCain’s case, he said that we should use more oil digging oil wells)…

1) Personal Opinion
…(1) I think that he is the ‘Real American’ whom we can see—black and white—the balance of the East (Indonesia), the West (America), and Africa (Kenya). True ideals of America, which are no discrimination, freedom to everyone, and equal chances. The country that everyone looks for the bright future and that can live disregarding religions, ideologies, and cultures. I think that it is the real ideal of the US (As Obama always said, America is the only county that the person like him can be the President).
(2) He went from the bottom. When he was at school, he was wandering due to racial identity and went through difficult time, such as using drugs. After he entered college, he overcame the racial identity and became the best. I trust people who went from the ‘bottom.’ They don’t forget about their ‘old times.’ They don’t forget why they changed their minds and ideals that they look for…
(3) Obama didn’t forget about his old times. With his profiles that he went to Harvard Law School and was the chief-editor of a law academic journal, he could go anywhere and to any companies. He could have nice and comfortable life with a big salary. However, he went back to Chicago in order to work for the local community and continued society activities.

(1) Korean Society
If a black man is selected as the US president, Korea having racial discrimination about ‘black’ will have a different perspective. Low level perspective that many Koreans have toward non-white foreigners will be improved a lot…
(2) Korean politics
….Obama’s victory will bring diverse opinions and perspectives, such as ‘being out of the times,’ ‘being ahead the times,’ ‘being obedient to the times’ to people and the government. Therefore, for domestic politics, I hope the victory of Obama.
If McCaine is selected, those old guys—past crimes—can brag about their networks to America and we have to put up with that. However, if Obama is selected, logical and young right wing people can rebuild up relations with the US in front. At least those people will not just follow ‘Americanism.’ Therefore I would like to see the victory of Obama.
(3) Korean Economy
… While Obama is not evading free trade, he will not leave the market free completely. In order to make jobs, it is desperate to protect their own industries… Especially, in order to protect manufacturing industry—automobile—that has the biggest effect for the employment, Obama will give big pressure to Korea and Japan… Therefore, industrial structure of Korea will rapidly change as well. Anyway, consumption is decreasing and the quantity of exports is going down as well. In the end, the expenses will go up. If Korea companies would like to keep the business, they can’t help but to make factories in the US. Job Shipping from Korea to the US might happen. The unemployment rate in Korea will go up…. In the meanwhile, new industry structure will be formed. Culture, software, environment, communications, and knowledge industries will grow up. As Obama emphasizes, environmental sectors are expected to be rapidly developed. Korea still has the 20th century industry structure. I support Obama because he will drive Korea to the 21st century industry structure.

… Democratic Party—Obama. Without missing this good chance, North Korea will be nice for better relations between North Korea and the US. They will be active in order to retrieve what they lost for 8 years of the Bush Government. If North Korea will build up stable relations now, they will have enough time during the Obama governance or 10 years if he is re-selected…
(3) If North Korea-US relations are better with Obama’s victory, economic situations of North Korea will be better. Rather than being the threat to South Korea, it will be good for South Korea in the long term. Everyone know that this will give less shock when we’re reunified.

(1) The tragic real president, Al Gore will be re-appraised by the Obama administration. Rapid eco-friendly policies will be expected. Especially, American will start stronger pressure about environment for a means of economic solutions for their own country.
(2) It is important to have real cooperation with other countries to the US government that is losing national power due to financial crisis and wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. It is impossible for McCain who sticks to the superior Americanism. However, he has relatives everywhere (Africa-his father’s side, Asia-his sister, America-his mother’s side, Europe-sister who studied in Germany). He spent his childhood in Indonesia, the biggest Islam country. He went through the racial identity in American society. He might avoid the superior Americanism or might hide it in public…
