The BBC has recently conducted a World Service poll which shows that out of 22,500 people surveyed in 22 countries, 49 per cent were in favor of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. One of the 22 countries included citizens from Brazil, where bloggers are typing away their opinions on the presidential election and showing strong support for the nominee.
Brazilian journalist and blogger Leila Corderio writes in her blog that although many believe Obama’s skin color plays a factor, she does not.
Meanwhile, a group of Brazilian citizens write in their shared blog, Xica Bahia, that Obama running for the position is inspiring for other minorities:
“Brazilians are paying close attention to US politics, especially the presidential race. For Afro-Brazilians in Bahia and in other parts of Brazil, it is empowering to see someone that looks like your uncle or brother running as president of the United States. You can’t go anywhere in Bahia without seeing something related to Obama.â€
And, Portuguese blog, Transparent Community, writes that five Brazilian politicians have even registered themselves under the name “Obama†to boost their campaigns:
“Local elections are rapidly approaching in Brazil. According to the Brazilian press, at least five candidates running in the local elections throughout the country are using the name “Barack Obama” in an effort to garner votes. The candidates, who are running for municipal positions, have registered their names as Obama on the ballots.â€
